What happens in the classroom rarely stays in the classroom. Long after the algebra formulas fade and the prom photos yellow, the effects of a public education linger for life. School shapes a child’s general knowledge, social skills, and even future earning power — which is exactly why the strength of a state’s school system ranks near the top of the list for families deciding where to plant roots.
And here’s the twist: a great public school isn’t something you can simply buy. A fat budget doesn’t automatically translate to higher test scores or smaller class sizes. More often than not, the quality of a child’s education comes down to one thing — which side of a state line they happen to grow up on.
Americans, for their part, aren’t feeling especially optimistic. According to recent Gallup polling, just 27% of adults say they have a “great deal” or “quite a lot” of confidence in the nation’s public schools. A separate Pew Research Center survey found that more than half of U.S. adults — 51% — believe public K–12 education is heading in the wrong direction.
To sort the honor-roll states from the ones stuck in detention, personal finance site WalletHub graded all 50 states across 32 different measures, everything from standardized test scores to classroom safety. Here’s how the country’s schools stack up.

New England didn’t just make the honor roll — it practically ran the whole classroom. Massachusetts and three of its neighbors claimed four of the top five spots in the country, while Vermont and Rhode Island rounded out the top 10.
Massachusetts, the runaway No. 1, posted the highest test scores in the entire nation across core subjects and led every other state in Advanced Placement performance. Connecticut also shined on standardized tests, but the Bay State edged ahead with the country’s highest share of students earning a 3 or better on their AP exams.
New Jersey, meanwhile, landed second nationally for reading test scores, powered by a deep bench of high-performing public high schools.

Out West, sunny New Mexico and sprawling Alaska showed the deepest cracks. Both states — along with Oklahoma — wrestled with weak test scores and stubbornly high dropout rates.
New Mexico landed dead last in the country for public education, saddled with the lowest math and reading scores and the lowest median SAT scores of any state. It wasn’t alone at the bottom: Western and Southern states filled out much of the lower tier, with Arizona, Nevada, Louisiana, and Alabama all ranking among the 10 lowest-rated school systems in the nation.
It’s About More Than Test Scores
Grades and SATs tell only part of the story. To build these rankings, WalletHub weighed dropout rates, bullying, campus safety, and student-to-teacher ratios right alongside academic performance.
On the safety front, Delaware and California reported the lowest rates of students facing threats or injuries on school grounds. On the other end, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama recorded the highest rates of student-reported violence and safety concerns — a sobering reminder that a truly strong school system isn’t measured by test scores alone. It also depends on giving students a safe, supportive place to learn.
